Unit Plan 18 (Grade 6 PE): Badminton — Doubles Strategy

Focus: Develop more accurate serve placement, stronger partner movement, and better tactical shot choices through doubles badminton.

Grade Level: 6

Subject Area: Physical Education

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–55 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this Grade 6 Physical Education unit, students build the skills and teamwork habits needed for successful doubles badminton play. Through short-serve and long-serve practice, rally work, and doubles games, students learn that success in badminton depends on more than simply hitting the shuttle over the net. Players must understand where to serve, how to move with a partner, when to cover the front or back of the court, and how to choose shots that create an advantage. The unit emphasizes serve placement, front/back coverage, communication, and making controlled tactical decisions during rallies. By the end of the week, students should be able to explain how doubles partners work together to create space, cover the court, and make smarter shot choices.

Essential Questions

  • How can players use serve placement to start a rally more effectively?
  • What helps doubles partners move together and cover space well?
  • How do force, angle, and timing affect badminton shots?
  • Why is communication important in doubles play?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Strike serves and rally shots with better direction, control, and consistency.
  2. Combine serving, striking, moving, and recovering more smoothly during doubles play.
  3. Use better court positioning and partner spacing in front/back coverage.
  4. Adjust force, angle, timing, and effort based on target area and game situation.
  5. Apply simple offensive tactics such as short serve placement, deep clears, and hitting into open space.
  6. Work cooperatively with a partner, communicate clearly, and include teammates positively.

Standards Alignment — Grade 6 PE (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.6e – Striking with Implements for Direction, Power, and Consistency Strike stationary and moving objects with short- and long-handled implements (paddle, racket, bat, stick) with consistent contact, controlled power, and intended direction.
    • Example: In badminton, students use controlled serves, clears, and returns to send the shuttle into intended court spaces.
  • PE:S1.6f – Integrating Multiple Skills in Fluid Game Sequences Combine multiple skills—such as dribbling, passing, catching, striking, running, dodging, and shooting—smoothly and appropriately during extended game sequences.
    • Example: A student serves, recovers to base position, moves with a partner, and continues the rally with controlled striking and court coverage.
  • PE:S2.6a – Space Awareness & Positioning in Team and Individual Games Demonstrate consistent understanding of offensive and defensive space by moving to open areas, adjusting position relative to teammates, opponents, and scoring areas.
    • Example: In doubles badminton, students use front/back spacing, avoid bunching, and shift based on where the shuttle is played.
  • PE:S2.6c – Adjusting Effort, Force, Angle, and Timing Based on Context Adjust speed, effort, force, angle, and timing of movements and skills according to distance, defensive pressure, and scoring or placement goals.
    • Example: Students use a softer short serve for the front service box and a deeper, higher clear when trying to move opponents back.
  • PE:S2.6d – Offensive Strategies: Creating and Exploiting Advantages Apply offensive strategies such as creating space, using give-and-go, setting simple screens, recognizing mismatches, and choosing high-percentage plays.
    • Example: In doubles badminton, students choose safer serves, aim away from opponents, and use partner positioning to create better rally opportunities.
  • PE:S4.6b – Cooperation, Leadership, and Inclusive Participation Work cooperatively with diverse peers, assume and rotate leadership roles (captain, referee, coach, equipment manager), and intentionally include all group members.
    • Example: Doubles partners communicate respectfully, share responsibilities, encourage one another, and help keep games organized and fair.
