Unit Plan 8 (Grade 6 PE): Basketball — Offense & Defense
Grade 6 basketball unit improves dribbling under pressure, offensive spacing, give-and-go play, and man-to-man help defense in small-sided games.
Focus: Improve dribbling under pressure, smarter movement to open space, and stronger man-to-man and help defense through small-sided basketball.
Grade Level: 6
Subject Area: Physical Education
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–55 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this Grade 6 Physical Education unit, students develop the basic offensive and defensive habits needed for successful small-sided basketball. Through controlled dribbling, passing on the move, cutting, and defensive positioning, students learn that basketball is not only about scoring, but also about spacing, timing, and teamwork. The unit emphasizes dribbling under pressure, moving without the ball, and using simple offensive actions such as give-and-go and cut and replace to create better scoring opportunities. On defense, students begin to understand the value of staying with a player, denying easy passes, and helping when a teammate is beaten. By the end of the week, students should be able to explain how offense and defense work together to create organized, active, and more successful basketball play.
Essential Questions
- How can players use dribbling, passing, and cutting to create better offensive chances?
- What does it mean to move into open space in basketball?
- How can defenders use man-to-man defense, pass denial, and help defense effectively?
- Why do spacing, communication, and effort matter in small-sided basketball?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Pass and catch accurately while moving and under defensive pressure.
- Dribble under control while changing speed and direction in game situations.
- Combine dribbling, passing, cutting, receiving, and shooting more smoothly during live play.
- Move to open space and maintain better offensive and defensive positioning.
- Apply simple offensive strategies such as give-and-go and cut and replace.
- Apply defensive strategies such as man-to-man defense, pass denial, containment, and help defense.
- Stay actively engaged in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity during drills and games.
Standards Alignment — Grade 6 PE (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S1.6c – Throwing & Catching with Accuracy in Dynamic Situations Throw and catch with accuracy and appropriate force in dynamic situations, including while moving, under pressure, or in contested game play.
- Example: In small-sided basketball, students lead teammates with passes, catch on the move, and complete passes despite defensive pressure.
- PE:S1.6d – Kicking, Dribbling & Ball Control with Feet in Game Play Control, dribble, pass, and shoot a ball with the feet using both dominant and non-dominant sides, adjusting force and angle to meet tactical needs.
- Example: In basketball-style play, students use controlled dribbling to navigate pressure, change direction, and protect the ball before making a pass or shot.
- PE:S1.6f – Integrating Multiple Skills in Fluid Game Sequences Combine multiple skills—such as dribbling, passing, catching, striking, running, dodging, and shooting—smoothly and appropriately during extended game sequences.
- Example: A student dribbles into space, passes to a teammate, cuts toward the basket, receives a return pass, and finishes a shot under control.
- PE:S2.6a – Space Awareness & Positioning in Team and Individual Games Demonstrate consistent understanding of offensive and defensive space by moving to open areas, adjusting position relative to teammates, opponents, and scoring areas.
- Example: In 3v3 or 4v4 basketball, students spread out on offense, cut to open lanes, and recover to guard space or players on defense.
- PE:S2.6d – Offensive Strategies: Creating and Exploiting Advantages Apply offensive strategies such as creating space, using give-and-go, setting simple screens, recognizing mismatches, and choosing high-percentage plays.
- Example: In basketball, students use give-and-go, cut and replace, and quick support movement to create better scoring opportunities.
- PE:S2.6e – Defensive Strategies: Marking, Containment, and Help Defense Apply defensive principles such as marking a specific player, containing penetrations, maintaining good body position, and providing help defense when teammates are beaten.
- Example: Students stay between their player and the basket, deny easy passes, help on drives, and recover to their assignment.
- PE:S3.6a – Regular Participation in Moderate-to-Vigorous Physical Activity Participate regularly in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during class and demonstrate effort to remain active and engaged for most of the lesson.
- Example: During continuous small-sided games and skill drills, students remain moving, limit idle time, and fully participate in gameplay.
