Unit Plan 21 (Grade 6 PE): Team Handball — Tactical Play

Grade 6 team handball unit builds passing under pressure, offensive spacing, give-and-go timing, help defense, and fast transition play.

Unit Plan 21 (Grade 6 PE): Team Handball — Tactical Play

Focus: Develop stronger passing and catching under pressure, improve offensive spacing, and build better understanding of give-and-go, attacking gaps, help defense, and quick transition between offense and defense.

Grade Level: 6

Subject Area: Physical Education

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–55 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this Grade 6 Physical Education unit, students learn how to play team handball with greater control, awareness, and teamwork. Through passing, cutting, shooting, defensive movement, and live small-sided games, students discover that successful handball depends on much more than throwing hard or moving fast. Teams must space the floor, recognize open lanes, use give-and-go action to create opportunities, and quickly transition when possession changes. On defense, students begin understanding how to stay between opponents and the goal, help when a teammate gets beaten, and recover back into position. By the end of the week, students should be able to explain how tactical movement, smart passing, and organized defense improve team handball play.

Essential Questions

  • How can players use spacing and give-and-go to create scoring chances?
  • What helps an attacker identify and attack an open gap?
  • How can defenders use containment and help defense effectively?
  • Why is fast transition between offense and defense important in team handball?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Throw and catch with better accuracy, timing, and control during live play.
  2. Combine passing, catching, cutting, moving, and shooting more smoothly in game situations.
  3. Use offensive spacing with wings and top positions to avoid crowding and create lanes.
  4. Adjust passing force, shot timing, and movement choices based on defenders and open space.
  5. Apply offensive strategies such as give-and-go, attacking gaps, and choosing high-percentage shots.
  6. Apply defensive strategies such as man defense, zone defense, help defense, and transition recovery.
  7. Stay actively engaged in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity throughout drills and games.
  8. Follow safety rules consistently and help maintain a safe playing environment.

Standards Alignment — Grade 6 PE (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.6c – Throwing & Catching with Accuracy in Dynamic Situations Throw and catch with accuracy and appropriate force in dynamic situations, including while moving, under pressure, or in contested game play.
    • Example: In team handball, students pass to moving teammates, catch on the run, and complete throws despite defensive pressure.
  • PE:S1.6f – Integrating Multiple Skills in Fluid Game Sequences Combine multiple skills—such as dribbling, passing, catching, striking, running, dodging, and shooting—smoothly and appropriately during extended game sequences.
    • Example: A student passes, cuts into space, receives a return pass, and finishes with a controlled shot during a live attack.
  • PE:S2.6a – Space Awareness & Positioning in Team and Individual Games Demonstrate consistent understanding of offensive and defensive space by moving to open areas, adjusting position relative to teammates, opponents, and scoring areas.
    • Example: In 4v4 or 5v5 handball, students spread into wing and top positions on offense and recover to protect scoring space on defense.
  • PE:S2.6c – Adjusting Effort, Force, Angle, and Timing Based on Context Adjust speed, effort, force, angle, and timing of movements and skills according to distance, defensive pressure, and scoring or placement goals.
    • Example: Students choose a softer short pass into a tight gap, a firmer pass to a wing, or a timed shot when the defense is late.
  • PE:S2.6d – Offensive Strategies: Creating and Exploiting Advantages Apply offensive strategies such as creating space, using give-and-go, setting simple screens, recognizing mismatches, and choosing high-percentage plays.
    • Example: In handball, students use give-and-go movement, attack open seams, and choose better passing or shooting options instead of forcing plays.
  • PE:S2.6e – Defensive Strategies: Marking, Containment, and Help Defense Apply defensive principles such as marking a specific player, containing penetrations, maintaining good body position, and providing help defense when teammates are beaten.
    • Example: Students stay between attackers and the goal, help on drives, and recover quickly to cover open players.
  • PE:S3.6a – Regular Participation in Moderate-to-Vigorous Physical Activity Participate regularly in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during class and demonstrate effort to remain active and engaged for most of the lesson.
    • Example: During handball drills and games, students stay active, transition quickly, and remain involved in each possession.
  • PE:S4.6a – Consistent Rule-Following and Safety for Self & Others Consistently follow rules, procedures, and safety expectations, and model safe behavior with equipment, space, and classmates.
    • Example: Students avoid unsafe contact, respect boundaries, stop on signal, and play with control around the goal area.
