Unit Plan 9 (Grade 7 Art): Revision & Reflection — Project I
Grade 7 art revision unit focused on refining Studio Project I through rubric-based feedback, targeted improvements, and reflection on artistic growth and process.
Focus: Revise artwork and reflect on improvements, using rubric-based evaluation and feedback to refine clarity, technique, and organization in Studio Project I.
Grade Level: 7
Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Studio Practice • Critique & Reflection)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students return to Studio Project I with fresh eyes, focusing on revision and reflection as essential parts of the artistic process. Using rubrics, critique notes, and teacher feedback, they identify specific improvement goals for their work and make targeted changes to strengthen composition, craftsmanship, and communication of intent. Students also learn to document their growth by comparing “before and after” stages and writing reflective statements about what changed and why. By the end of the week, they can explain how feedback, revision, and self-evaluation helped them move their work closer to their artistic vision.
Essential Questions
- How can I use rubrics, feedback, and self-evaluation to see my artwork more clearly?
- What kinds of revisions most improve clarity, technique, and organization in a finished piece?
- How do I decide which feedback to accept, adapt, or set aside while still staying true to my artistic intent?
- Why is reflection an important step in becoming a stronger artist over time?
- How can I show evidence of growth between the first version of my project and the revised version?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Revisit Studio Project I using a rubric and previous critique notes to evaluate strengths and areas for growth (VA:Re9.7a).
- Identify 1–3 focused revision goals that address clarity of intent, composition, and/or craftsmanship (VA:Cr3.7a).
- Make visible revisions to their artwork that incorporate peer and teacher feedback to improve organization and technique (VA:Cr3.7a).
- Use art vocabulary and criteria to describe specific changes made between the initial and revised versions (VA:Re9.7a).
- Write a concise revision and reflection statement explaining how their project improved and what they learned from the process (VA:Cr3.7a, VA:Re9.7a).
Standards Alignment — 7th Grade (NCAS-Aligned)
