Unit Plan 15 (Grade 7 Art): Studio Project II — Production

Focus: Create message-driven artwork using strong composition, demonstrating planning, technical growth, and clear visual intent from initial layout to final presentation.

Grade Level: 7

Subject Area: Art (Visual ArtsDesign & CommunicationStudio Practice)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students move from planning to full production of a message-driven artwork. Building on previous idea and layout work, they focus on composition, craftsmanship, and clarity of message as they develop a finished piece. Through structured work sessions, short check-ins, and mini peer reviews, students make decisions about focal point, balance, and detail that support their message and intended audience. By the end, they complete a Studio Project II artwork that shows technical growth, intentional design, and a clearly communicated idea.

Essential Questions

  • How can I turn a planned design into a polished artwork while keeping my message clear?
  • What does it look like to show technical growth and strong composition in a finished piece?
  • How do choices about focal point, balance, and detail affect how viewers read my message?
  • What working habits (revision, persistence, time management) help me complete a high-quality studio project?
  • How can I tell if my final artwork actually communicates what I intended?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Use their existing plan or layout to begin a message-driven artwork, accurately transferring key composition decisions (VA:Cr3.7b).
  2. Maintain a clear focal point and overall balance while developing line, shape, value, and/or color across the artwork (VA:Cr3.7b).
  3. Demonstrate technical growth (e.g., cleaner lines, smoother color, better control of media) compared to earlier projects (VA:Cr3.7b).
  4. Make in-process adjustments to composition and details when something is not supporting the intended message or visual clarity (VA:Cr3.7b).
  5. Complete a Studio Project II artwork that reflects planning, craftsmanship, and clear visual intent, supported by a brief reflection on strengths and next steps (VA:Cr3.7b).

Standards Alignment — 7th Grade (NCAS-Aligned)

  • VA:Cr3.7b — Complete artwork that demonstrates planning, technical growth, and clear visual intent.
    • Example: Students produce a final mixed-media piece reflecting thoughtful design choices.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can follow my plan or layout while still making smart adjustments as I work.
  • I can show strong composition with a clear focal point and balanced arrangement of shapes and colors.
  • I can see improvement in my technique (line, shading, color, blending, neatness) compared to my earlier projects.
  • I can explain how my choices support my message and help my audience understand what I’m saying.
  • I can finish a studio project on time with careful craftsmanship and a short reflection on what I did well and what I’d improve next time.
