Unit Plan 27 (Grade 7 Band): Ensemble Performance
Perform Grade 7 band repertoire with confident accuracy and professionalism while refining pitch, rhythm, tone, balance, expression, and rehearsal etiquette through focused rehearsals, mock performances, and reflective goal-setting.
Focus: Perform ensemble repertoire with confidence, accuracy, and professionalism, demonstrating solid pitch, rhythm, tone quality, and expressive intent while following appropriate rehearsal and performance etiquette.
Grade Level: 7
Subject Area: Band (Performing • Rehearsing • Ensemble Skills)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students bring together their developing skills in technique, reading, style, and collaboration to focus on full ensemble performance. They refine pitch, rhythm, tone quality, balance, and expression on current repertoire while also practicing professional etiquette—entering, exiting, following conductor cues, and supporting section-mates. Through guided run-throughs, targeted “fix-it” rehearsals, and mock performances, students learn what it means to be performance-ready and how their individual preparation and behavior impact the entire group. By the end of the week, students will perform selected repertoire and reflect on their growth as ensemble musicians.
Essential Questions
- What does a strong ensemble performance look and sound like in middle school band?
- How do pitch, rhythm, tone quality, balance, and expression all work together in a successful performance?
- Why do rehearsal and performance etiquette (focus, body language, collaboration) matter as much as playing the right notes?
- How can I use feedback and self-reflection to improve my performance and my contribution to the ensemble?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Perform selected ensemble repertoire with accurate pitch, rhythm, tone quality, and steady tempo.
- Demonstrate developing stylistic understanding by shaping dynamics and phrasing to fit the character of each piece.
- Follow conductor cues and maintain appropriate ensemble awareness (listening for balance, entrances, and cutoffs).
- Show appropriate rehearsal and performance etiquette, including focused posture, quiet transitions, and respectful peer support.
- Reflect on their individual and ensemble performance, identifying one area of strength and one growth goal for future performances.
