Unit Plan 31 (Grade 7 Band): Student-Led Rehearsals

Focus: Lead warm-ups or short rehearsal segments using effective strategies, demonstrating rehearsal etiquette, focused collaboration, and links to personal musical goals.

Grade Level: 7

Subject Area: Band (PerformingRehearsingLeadership/Connections)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students shift from being participants in rehearsal to acting as student leaders. They analyze what makes rehearsals effective—clear expectations, efficient warm-ups, focused listening, respectful communication—and then plan and lead short segments such as breathing, long tones, articulation drills, or tricky passages. Along the way, they connect leadership experiences to their personal goals as band musicians, reflecting on how taking responsibility for the ensemble’s success can build confidence, communication skills, and ownership of their musical growth.

Essential Questions

  • What does professional rehearsal etiquette look and sound like in a middle school band?
  • How can student leadership (warm-ups, counting off, giving reminders) improve ensemble focus and success?
  • How do my interests, experiences, and goals influence the way I rehearse and lead in band?
  • What leadership skills from band can transfer to other classes, activities, or future goals?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Describe and demonstrate appropriate rehearsal etiquette, including focused attention, professional entrances/exits, and respectful peer support.
  2. Plan a short student-led warm-up or rehearsal segment that targets a specific musical need (tone, rhythm, balance, etc.).
  3. Lead peers through the planned segment using clear verbal directions, count-offs, and nonverbal cues.
  4. Support peers by showing encouraging, constructive behavior while others lead, maintaining professional rehearsal norms.
  5. Reflect on how leading and participating in rehearsals connects to their personal musical goals and growth as band musicians.
