Unit Plan 31 (Grade 7 PE): Frisbee Golf & Outdoor Recreation

Focus: Develop better disc control, smarter distance and angle adjustments, and appreciation for low-organization outdoor recreation through Frisbee Golf while emphasizing etiquette, course respect, and lifelong activity planning.

Grade Level: 7

Subject Area: Physical Education

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–55 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this Grade 7 Physical Education unit, students explore Frisbee Golf as an accessible outdoor recreation activity that combines skill, strategy, and personal responsibility. Through backhand, forehand, and hammer throw practice, students learn how different throws can be used for accuracy, distance, and course management in a variety of settings. The unit emphasizes that Frisbee Golf is more than throwing a disc as far as possible; students must also read the environment, adjust force and angle, respect shared outdoor spaces, and follow etiquette that keeps the course safe and enjoyable for everyone. Students also connect Frisbee Golf to a broader understanding of lifelong physical activity, including how low-organization activities can support healthy choices, outdoor recreation, and regular movement outside school. By the end of the week, students should be able to explain how Frisbee Golf can be both a skill-based PE activity and a realistic lifelong recreation option.

Essential Questions

  • How do players adjust force, angle, and throw type in Frisbee Golf?
  • What makes Frisbee Golf a strong example of a low-organization outdoor recreation activity?
  • Why do etiquette and course respect matter in outdoor recreation settings?
  • How can activities like Frisbee Golf support healthy lifestyle choices and regular movement beyond PE?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Throw a disc with improved control and accuracy using backhand, forehand, and introductory hammer throws.
  2. Adjust force, angle, and timing of throws based on target distance, obstacles, and scoring goals.
  3. Reflect on how outdoor recreation activities can fit into healthy lifestyle choices and regular physical activity.
  4. Identify Frisbee Golf and similar outdoor recreation activities as realistic lifelong movement options.
  5. Make simple plans for how they could include outdoor recreation or other regular movement opportunities in their week.

Standards Alignment — Grade 7 PE (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.7c – Throwing & Catching with Accuracy in Competitive Play Throw and catch various objects with accuracy, appropriate force, and timing in competitive settings, including while defended, moving quickly, or under time constraints.
    • Example: In Frisbee Golf, a student throws accurately toward a target with a disc, adjusting release and power to improve placement.
  • PE:S2.7c – Adjusting Effort, Force, Angle & Timing to Game Conditions Adapt effort level, force, angle, and timing of passes, shots, serves, and runs in response to defensive pressure, distance, and scoring/placement goals.
    • Example: In Frisbee Golf, a student uses a softer throw for a short target, a stronger drive for distance, or a different release angle to avoid an obstacle.
  • PE:S3.7e – Making and Reflecting on Healthy Lifestyle Choices Identify and reflect on daily choices (activity, nutrition, sleep, hydration, substance avoidance, screen time) that impact health, and commit to improving at least one area.
    • Example: A student reflects on how choosing an outdoor activity like Frisbee Golf or walking can reduce inactive time and support healthier daily habits.
  • PE:S5.7c – Exploring Lifelong Physical Activity Options Identify and explore a variety of physical activities that can continue into teen and adult life, including both competitive and non-competitive options.
    • Example: Students recognize Frisbee Golf as a recreational activity they could continue with friends, family, or independently beyond school.
  • PE:S5.7d – Planning & Seeking Opportunities for Regular Activity Make simple plans for being physically active across a week, both in and out of school, and recognize or seek out local opportunities to be active.
    • Example: A student identifies local parks, open spaces, or school/community recreation options and includes outdoor activity in a weekly movement plan.
