Unit Plan 11 (Grade 7 PE): Health, Wellness & Habit Reflection

Focus: Connect health behaviors to physical performance and overall well-being, identify one realistic area for growth, and set a specific habit goal related to daily wellness.

Grade Level: 7

Subject Area: Physical Education

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–55 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this Grade 7 Physical Education unit, students explore how everyday choices affect their energy, mood, focus, and success in school and physical activity. Through a wellness walk, station-based tasks, and guided reflection, students examine habits related to sleep, nutrition, hydration, physical activity, screen time, and substance avoidance. Rather than treating health as a list of rules, the unit helps students make meaningful connections between daily behaviors and how they feel and perform. Students also revisit the idea that regular movement supports not only physical fitness, but also mental and social well-being. By the end of the week, students should be able to identify one habit they want to improve and create a practical goal they can actually follow.

Essential Questions

  • How do everyday habits such as sleep, nutrition, hydration, and screen time affect performance and well-being?
  • What health choices help students feel more focused, energetic, and ready to participate?
  • How does regular physical activity support physical, mental, and social health?
  • What makes a health goal realistic and worth following?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Explain how healthy habits influence physical activity, energy, focus, and overall wellness.
  2. Reflect on personal choices related to sleep, nutrition, hydration, activity, screen time, and substance avoidance.
  3. Describe how regular physical activity supports physical fitness, stress relief, mood, focus, and social well-being.
  4. Connect simple health and fitness ideas to FITT thinking and activity choices.
  5. Identify one realistic area for improvement and create a specific habit goal with a clear action step.

Standards Alignment — Grade 7 PE (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S3.7c – Applying Fitness Components & Training Principles Explain how different activities develop specific fitness components and apply FITT principles when designing and choosing workouts.
    • Example: A student explains that a workout of repeated short sprints builds speed and power, while longer steady runs improve endurance.
  • PE:S3.7e – Making and Reflecting on Healthy Lifestyle Choices Identify and reflect on daily choices (activity, nutrition, sleep, hydration, substance avoidance, screen time) that impact health, and commit to improving at least one area.
    • Example: A student decides to replace one sugary drink per day with water and track how this change affects energy and performance in PE.
  • PE:S5.7b – Describing Physical, Mental & Social Benefits of Activity Explain how regular physical activity supports physical fitness, mental health (stress relief, mood, focus), and social well-being (friendships, teamwork, belonging).
    • Example: Students describe how participating regularly in PE or sports helps them feel more energetic, reduces stress from school, and builds friendships.
