Unit Plan 27 (Grade 7 PE): Multi-Target, Castle & Strategy Games
Grade 7 Castle Ball and Pin Knockdown unit builds throwing accuracy, force and angle control, target strategy, and coordinated offensive and defensive team tactics.
Focus: Develop more accurate throwing, smarter target selection, and stronger team tactics through Castle Ball and Pin Knockdown games that require force control, angle awareness, and coordinated offensive/defensive roles.
Grade Level: 7
Subject Area: Physical Education
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–55 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this Grade 7 Physical Education unit, students apply throwing skill and tactical thinking in multi-target games such as Castle Ball and Pin Knockdown. Instead of simply throwing as hard as possible, students learn to adjust force, angle, and timing based on target distance, defender positioning, and team strategy. The unit emphasizes that success in target games depends on more than accuracy alone; players must also communicate, read the game, protect important spaces, and make smart offensive and defensive choices. Through assigned roles and short strategy time-outs, students begin to understand how coordinated teamwork can improve both scoring chances and defensive stability. By the end of the week, students should be able to explain how target selection, team roles, and tactical decision-making affect performance in these games.
Essential Questions
- How can players adjust force and angle to hit targets more effectively?
- When should a team attack a target directly, and when should it use a different strategy?
- What defensive choices help protect castles, pins, or key targets most effectively?
- How does communication improve offensive and defensive team play in multi-target games?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Throw and catch with improved accuracy, timing, and control in competitive target-game situations.
- Combine movement, catching, throwing, recovering, and repositioning fluidly during extended play.
- Adjust force, angle, and release timing based on target distance, obstacles, and defensive pressure.
- Apply offensive strategies such as choosing the best target, creating passing options, and using teammates effectively.
- Apply defensive strategies such as protecting high-value targets, helping, recovering, and transitioning quickly after changes in possession.
- Work cooperatively in assigned roles, communicate respectfully, and support inclusive team strategy.
Standards Alignment — Grade 7 PE (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S1.7c – Throwing & Catching with Accuracy in Competitive Play Throw and catch various objects with accuracy, appropriate force, and timing in competitive settings, including while defended, moving quickly, or under time constraints.
- Example: In Castle Ball or Pin Knockdown, a student throws accurately at a target from an appropriate distance and receives quick passes from teammates under pressure.
- PE:S1.7f – Integrating Multiple Skills Fluidly During Extended Play Combine locomotor, manipulative, and stability skills in extended game play, maintaining control and appropriate technique even when fatigued or under pressure.
- Example: In a live game, a student catches, pivots, moves into space, makes a controlled throw at a target, and recovers into defensive position.
- PE:S2.7c – Adjusting Effort, Force, Angle & Timing to Game Conditions Adapt effort level, force, angle, and timing of passes, shots, serves, and runs in response to defensive pressure, distance, and scoring/placement goals.
- Example: In a target game, a student uses a softer, more accurate throw at a close target or a stronger, flatter throw when attacking a farther target under pressure.
- PE:S2.7d – Offensive Strategies: Creating & Exploiting Opportunities Select and apply offensive strategies such as using screens, give-and-go, overlaps, switching fields, and recognizing mismatches to create scoring chances.
- Example: In Castle Ball, students use quick passing, spacing, and target switching to create better scoring opportunities against defenders.
- PE:S2.7e – Defensive Strategies: Marking, Help Defense & Transition Implement defensive principles including marking, staying between opponent and goal, providing help defense, recovering in transition, and adjusting to changes in possession.
- Example: In Pin Knockdown, defenders protect high-value targets, help teammates when a throw is coming, and recover quickly when the ball changes sides.
- PE:S4.7b – Cooperative Teamwork, Leadership & Inclusion Work effectively with diverse peers, taking on and rotating leadership roles (captain, coach, referee, equipment manager) while ensuring all teammates are included and valued.
- Example: A student helps organize target assignments, encourages teammates, and includes all players in team strategy discussions and game decisions.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can throw with better accuracy by changing my force and angle.
- I can choose targets more strategically instead of throwing randomly.
- I can move, catch, throw, and recover as part of a team.
- I can help protect important targets on defense and recover quickly when the play changes.
- I can communicate and work with teammates in a positive, useful way.
