Unit Plan 21 (Grade 7 PE): Team Handball — Attacking & Defending Gaps
Grade 7 Team Handball unit builds smarter gap attacks, sharper give-and-go timing, organized defensive rotation, and quick transition in structured small-sided play.
Focus: Develop smarter attacking of open lanes, stronger give-and-go timing, and more organized defensive rotation through structured Team Handball with quick transition and clear positional roles.
Grade Level: 7
Subject Area: Physical Education
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–55 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this Grade 7 Physical Education unit, students build team handball skills by learning how spacing, passing, cutting, and defensive recovery work together in fast-paced invasion play. Through passing and cutting patterns, 2v1 and 3v2 drills, and structured 4v4 or 5v5 games, students learn how to attack open gaps, move the defense, and create better shooting chances. The unit also emphasizes defensive positioning, including rotating to help teammates, recovering to dangerous spaces, and transitioning quickly when possession changes. Students are introduced to simple positional ideas such as wing, center, and pivot so they can better understand how organized team play creates advantages. By the end of the week, students should be able to explain how offensive and defensive decisions shape successful Team Handball play.
Essential Questions
- How can players attack open lanes instead of forcing difficult passes or shots?
- What makes a give-and-go or quick pass-and-cut effective in Team Handball?
- How do defenders rotate and recover when the offense moves the ball quickly?
- Why do spacing, communication, and quick transition matter in invasion games like Team Handball?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Throw and catch with greater accuracy, timing, and control while moving and under defensive pressure.
- Combine passing, catching, cutting, driving, shooting, and recovery fluidly during extended Team Handball play.
- Use spatial awareness to occupy wing, center, and pivot spaces and support offensive and defensive shape.
- Adjust the force, angle, and timing of passes, cuts, and shots based on defenders, available lanes, and game situations.
- Apply offensive strategies such as give-and-go, attacking gaps, quick support movement, and using width to create chances.
- Apply defensive strategies such as marking, helping, rotating, recovering, and transitioning quickly after a turnover.
- Stay actively engaged for most of class during drills and games with quick transitions and strong effort.
- Follow rules, routines, and safety expectations independently during handball activities.
Standards Alignment — Grade 7 PE (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S1.7c – Throwing & Catching with Accuracy in Competitive Play Throw and catch various objects with accuracy, appropriate force, and timing in competitive settings, including while defended, moving quickly, or under time constraints.
- Example: In team handball, a student throws a leading pass to a teammate cutting into space and secures catches while moving under defensive pressure.
- PE:S1.7f – Integrating Multiple Skills Fluidly During Extended Play Combine locomotor, manipulative, and stability skills in extended game play, maintaining control and appropriate technique even when fatigued or under pressure.
- Example: In a full game, a student catches, pivots, passes, cuts, receives again, and shoots while maintaining balance and awareness.
- PE:S2.7a – Spatial Awareness & Tactical Positioning in Team Play Demonstrate consistent understanding of space and positioning by adjusting to teammates, opponents, and scoring areas in both offense and defense.
- Example: In 4v4 or 5v5 Team Handball, students recognize when to spread into wing space, support from center, or recover to protect the middle on defense.
- PE:S2.7c – Adjusting Effort, Force, Angle & Timing to Game Conditions Adapt effort level, force, angle, and timing of passes, shots, serves, and runs in response to defensive pressure, distance, and scoring/placement goals.
- Example: In Team Handball, a student chooses a quick short pass to a nearby cutter, a firmer pass to the wing, or a controlled shot into open space based on the defense.
- PE:S2.7d – Offensive Strategies: Creating & Exploiting Opportunities Select and apply offensive strategies such as using screens, give-and-go, overlaps, switching fields, and recognizing mismatches to create scoring chances.
- Example: In Team Handball, students use give-and-go movement and quick passing to pull defenders out of position and attack gaps.
- PE:S2.7e – Defensive Strategies: Marking, Help Defense & Transition Implement defensive principles including marking, staying between opponent and goal, providing help defense, recovering in transition, and adjusting to changes in possession.
- Example: When possession changes, students quickly recover toward goal, pick up attackers, and rotate to cover dangerous lanes.
- PE:S3.7a – Consistent Engagement in Moderate-to-Vigorous Activity Participate actively and consistently in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for significant portions of class and show effort to reduce non-active time.
- Example: During drills and small-sided games, students stay active between plays, move quickly into position, and remain engaged throughout class.
- PE:S4.7a – Following Rules, Routines & Safety Protocols Independently Consistently follow and model classroom rules, procedures, and safety expectations with minimal reminders, and help ensure a safe environment for others.
- Example: Students use safe movement in crowded spaces, avoid unsafe contact, respond quickly to stop signals, and follow handball boundaries and rules responsibly.
