Unit Plan 6 (Grade 7 PE): Volleyball — Serve, Bump, Set & Simple Systems

Build Grade 7 volleyball skills with serving, bumping, setting, three-contact play, serve-receive positioning, and teamwork through engaging small-sided games.

Unit Plan 6 (Grade 7 PE): Volleyball — Serve, Bump, Set & Simple Systems

Focus: Develop consistent serving, controlled forearm passing, basic setting, and simple team systems through small-sided volleyball with three-contact expectations, serve-receive shape, and base coverage.

Grade Level: 7

Subject Area: Physical Education

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–55 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this Grade 7 Physical Education unit, students build volleyball skills that help rallies last longer and team play become more organized. Rather than simply trying to hit the ball over the net any way possible, students learn how to serve with more purpose, pass with better control, and use a simple bump–set–send pattern to keep the ball in play. The unit introduces a basic three-contact expectation, simple “W” serve-receive positioning, and early understanding of rotation and base coverage so students can begin to see volleyball as a team system instead of a series of random touches. By the end of the week, students should be able to explain how serving accuracy, body position, spacing, and communication help a team function more successfully on both offense and defense.

Essential Questions

  • What helps a team control the ball well enough to use three contacts in volleyball?
  • How do serve placement, forearm passing, and setting help create more successful rallies?
  • What does a simple serve-receive shape and base coverage look like in 3v3 or 4v4 volleyball?
  • How do communication, teamwork, and role awareness improve volleyball play?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Serve with increasing control and consistency to specific zones on the court.
  2. Perform controlled forearm passes and basic sets that help teammates continue the rally.
  3. Combine movement, ready position, passing, setting, and sending the ball over in extended small-sided play.
  4. Use spatial awareness to spread appropriately, move into serve-receive positions, and recover to base coverage after contact.
  5. Adjust force, angle, and timing of serves and passes based on distance, teammate position, and game pressure.
  6. Apply simple offensive ideas such as three-contact play, pass-to-target, and sending the ball to open space.
  7. Work cooperatively in small teams, rotate roles fairly, and support teammates through communication and inclusion.

Standards Alignment — Grade 7 PE (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.7e – Striking with Implements for Placement, Power & Consistency Strike stationary and moving objects with paddles, rackets, bats, or sticks to consistently send them to intended areas with appropriate speed, spin, and trajectory.
    • Example: In volleyball, a student serves or sends a ball with controlled trajectory to a chosen zone, adjusting force and direction based on team strategy.
  • PE:S1.7f – Integrating Multiple Skills Fluidly During Extended Play Combine locomotor, manipulative, and stability skills in extended game play, maintaining control and appropriate technique even when fatigued or under pressure.
    • Example: In volleyball, a student moves from ready position to a forearm pass, transitions to base, then helps continue the rally with a controlled second or third contact.
  • PE:S2.7a – Spatial Awareness & Tactical Positioning in Team Play Demonstrate consistent understanding of space and positioning by adjusting to teammates, opponents, and scoring areas in both offense and defense.
    • Example: In 3v3 or 4v4 volleyball, students spread to receive serves, shift to cover tips or short balls, and recover to base positions after each contact.
  • PE:S2.7c – Adjusting Effort, Force, Angle & Timing to Game Conditions Adapt effort level, force, angle, and timing of passes, shots, serves, and runs in response to defensive pressure, distance, and scoring/placement goals.
    • Example: In volleyball, a student uses a softer forearm pass to the setter area or a firmer serve to a deep open zone depending on the situation.
  • PE:S2.7d – Offensive Strategies: Creating & Exploiting Opportunities Select and apply offensive strategies such as using screens, give-and-go, overlaps, switching fields, and recognizing mismatches to create scoring chances.
    • Example: In volleyball, students use pass-to-target and third-ball placement to create more organized attacks and send the ball into uncovered areas.
  • PE:S4.7b – Cooperative Teamwork, Leadership & Inclusion Work effectively with diverse peers, taking on and rotating leadership roles (captain, coach, referee, equipment manager) while ensuring all teammates are included and valued.
    • Example: A student helps organize rotations, encourages a teammate after a missed serve, and makes sure all players get chances to contribute during game play.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can serve with better control to a chosen area.
  • I can use a forearm pass and basic set to help my team keep the ball playable.
  • I can move to the right spot in serve-receive and recover to base after the ball is played.
  • I can help my team use three contacts instead of just sending the ball back right away.
  • I can communicate and work with teammates in a positive, inclusive way.
