Unit Plan 8 (Grade 7 Social Studies): Crossroads of Cultures—Trade and Technology
Investigate how innovations, science, and major trade routes connected Europe, Africa, and Asia, driving the diffusion of goods, ideas, and technologies across the Silk Road, Indian Ocean, and trans-Saharan networks.
Focus: Investigate how inventions, science, and trade networks linked Europe, Africa, and Asia through the Silk Road, Indian Ocean, and trans-Saharan routes.
Grade Level: 7
Subject Area: Social Studies (World History • Geography • Economics • Inquiry)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students explore how technologies (e.g., paper, printing, compass, astrolabe, lateen sail, gunpowder), scientific knowledge (e.g., algebra, numerals, astronomy, medicine), and trade systems created interdependence across Afro-Eurasia. Using maps, traveler accounts, and object studies, they analyze diffusion, resources, and hubs (e.g., Timbuktu, Cairo, Baghdad, Chang’an, Gujarat, Venice, Kilwa, Malacca).
Essential Questions
- How do trade routes move not only goods but also ideas, beliefs, and technologies?
- What made regions interdependent, and how did resources shape economies?
- Which innovation most transformed Afro-Eurasian exchange—and why?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Describe global networks of exchange and explain diffusion of goods/ideas/beliefs (Geo.5).
- Map interdependence across the Silk Road, Indian Ocean, and trans-Saharan routes with goods, risks, and returns (Econ.4).
- Identify natural, human, and capital resources that powered regional economies and global exchange (Econ.5).
- Develop a source-based explanation/argument with cited evidence about trade and technology (Inq.4).
Standards Alignment — 7th Grade (C3-based custom)
- 7.C3.Geo.5 — Global networks & diffusion across continents.
- 7.C3.Econ.4 — Interdependence via Silk Road/Indian Ocean/trans-Saharan trade.
- 7.C3.Econ.5 — Natural/human/capital resources shaping exchange.
- 7.C3.Inq.4 — Explanations/arguments using multiple sources and citations.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can label and explain how a good/idea diffused along a route using a map and brief notes.
- I can compare two routes for interdependence and resources using specific examples.
- I can write a claim about the most impactful innovation and cite at least two sources.
