Unit Plan 27 (Grade 8 Band): Ensemble Performance

Focus: Perform ensemble repertoire with independence, accuracy, and confidence, demonstrating strong musicianship, leadership, and professionalism in rehearsal and performance.

Grade Level: 8

Subject Area: Band (PerformingEnsemble SkillsLeadership & Professionalism)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students focus on putting all their individual skills together into confident ensemble performance. They work on playing with accurate pitch, rhythm, tone, balance, blend, and style, while also demonstrating focus, leadership, and professionalism in rehearsals and run-throughs. Through targeted rehearsals, section leadership opportunities, and a culminating in-class or informal performance, students practice taking responsibility for their part, their section, and the overall group sound. By the end of the unit, they can perform selected repertoire with independence, musical sensitivity, and stage-ready behavior.

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to perform as a confident, independent musician within a large ensemble?
  • How do pitch, rhythm, tone, balance, blend, and style combine to create a strong ensemble performance?
  • How can students show leadership, focus, and professionalism before, during, and after performances?
  • What rehearsal habits help us move from “just playing the notes” to a polished, expressive performance?
  • How can we support our section and the full band so everyone feels prepared and confident on stage?
