Unit Plan 2 (Grade 8 PE): Soccer — Possession, Pressing & Finishing
Grade 8 PE soccer unit developing spacing, give-and-go passing, switching fields, and pressing defense through 3-player drills and tactical 5v5 games.
Focus: Develop advanced spacing, give-and-go, switching fields, and pressing/covering on defense through structured 3-player passing warm-ups and 5v5 soccer scenarios.
Grade Level: 8
Subject Area: Physical Education (Invasion Games • Tactical Awareness • Fitness & Effort)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–55 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students build on prior soccer experience to play fast, tactical 5v5 games that emphasize possession, switching the point of attack, and pressing or dropping as a defensive unit. Each day begins with 3-player passing combinations (wall passes, overlaps) focused on first touch, timing of runs, and communication. In game play, students practice building from the back, using width to switch fields, and choosing when to high press or drop back and cover space. Throughout the unit, they reflect on their decision-making, effort, and ability to stay engaged in moderate-to-vigorous activity for most of class.
Essential Questions
- How can we use spacing, angles, and movement off the ball to keep possession and create high-quality chances in 5v5 soccer?
- When is it better to high press and when should a team drop back and protect space?
- How do first touch, passing accuracy, and timing affect our ability to switch fields and finish attacks?
- What does it look like to stay in moderate-to-vigorous activity for most of a soccer lesson while still playing under control and safely?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Perform soccer-specific locomotor skills (sprinting, shuffling, checking in/out, recovery runs) with control, agility, and game awareness.
- Dribble, pass, and shoot with the feet using both sides, adjusting touch, speed, and direction based on pressure and space.
- Execute 3-player passing combinations (wall passes, overlaps, through balls) with correct timing and movement off the ball.
- Apply offensive strategies in 5v5 games, including spreading the field, give-and-go, and switching fields to exploit space.
- Apply defensive strategies, including pressing the ball, covering passing lanes, and transitioning quickly between attack and defense.
- Sustain moderate-to-vigorous activity for most of class time by staying engaged, limiting standing, and using smart positioning.
Standards Alignment — 8th Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S1.8a – Locomotor Skills with Speed, Agility & Game Awareness Perform locomotor skills (sprinting, shuffling, backpedaling, cutting, bounding) with control and precision while reading the game and adjusting movements to create or close space.
- Example: In a fast-paced invasion game, a student sprints into open space, plants and cuts sharply to lose a defender, then quickly adjusts when the play reverses.
- PE:S1.8d – Kicking, Dribbling & Ball Control for Tactical Purposes Dribble, pass, and shoot with the feet using both stronger and weaker sides, intentionally choosing touch, speed, and direction to match tactical decisions in the game.
- Example: In soccer, a student uses small controlled touches to navigate tight spaces, then a firm driven pass to switch the point of attack or a placed shot to the open corner.
- PE:S1.8f – Integrating Complex Skill Combinations in Continuous Play Combine locomotor, manipulative, and stability skills in complex, continuous sequences during game play, maintaining form and control throughout.
- Example: In a game, a student dribbles, executes a crossover, passes to a teammate, cuts to space, receives a return pass, and takes a balanced, accurate shot—all under defensive pressure.
- PE:S2.8a – Advanced Spatial Awareness & Tactical Positioning Consistently use spatial awareness to adjust positioning relative to teammates, opponents, and scoring areas, both in offense and defense, in real time.
- Example: In 5v5 or 6v6 games, students recognize when to spread wide, cut to gaps, rotate defensively, or drop into support positions without prompting.
- PE:S2.8b – Using Pathways, Levels, Tempo & Deception Strategically Intentionally select and vary pathways, levels, speed, and feints to create offensive opportunities and disrupt opponents’ strategies.
- Example: A student changes pace, uses a hesitation move, and then sharply cuts diagonally to receive a pass behind a defender.
- PE:S2.8c – Adjusting Effort, Force, Angle & Timing Based on Game Demands Adjust effort level, force, angle, and timing of skills (passes, shots, serves, runs) after interpreting distance, defensive pressure, and risk/benefit of different options.
- Example: In a net game, a student chooses a soft angled shot when the opponent is deep and a powerful deep shot when the opponent is crowding the net.
- PE:S2.8d – Selecting & Applying Offensive Strategies Effectively Identify and apply offensive strategies (spreading the field, using screens, give-and-go, overlaps, switching fields, setting picks) to create high-percentage scoring chances.
- Example: In basketball or handball, students run a set play (screen-and-roll or backdoor cut), read the defense, and make a smart choice between shooting or passing.
- PE:S2.8e – Executing Defensive Strategies & Transitions Smoothly Apply defensive concepts (marking, denying passing lanes, help defense, hedging, recovery, and transition defense) fluidly as the game flow changes.
- Example: After a turnover, students quickly communicate, pick up players or zones, stop fast breaks, and then shift back into half-court or set defense.
- PE:S3.8a – Sustained Engagement in Moderate-to-Vigorous Activity Participate actively in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for most of class time and demonstrate the ability to sustain effort across longer intervals or game play.
- Example: During continuous small-sided games or fitness circuits, a student stays engaged, limits standing around, and completes all rounds with evident effort.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can move into and out of space at the right time to support passes, press the ball, or cover teammates.
- I can use first touch and passing with both feet to keep possession and set up give-and-go or overlap runs.
- I can use strategies like spreading the field, switching sides, and high pressing or dropping back depending on the game situation.
- I can stay in moderate-to-vigorous activity for most of class by staying involved, moving off the ball, and limiting standing still.
- I can describe a moment in a game when I made a good decision about when to pass, dribble, shoot, or press.
