Unit Plan 8 (Grade K Art): Adding Details

Focus: Improve artwork by adding missing parts or background after discussion.

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 30–45 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, kindergarten students learn that artists can go back and improve their artwork by adding details and backgrounds. They look at simple pictures that feel “unfinished” and talk about what could be added to make the story clearer—like the ground, the sky, clothes, or small features. After short discussions with the teacher and classmates, students revise their own artwork by adding missing parts and backgrounds. By the end of the unit, they understand that making changes and adding details is a normal, helpful part of making art.

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to add details to my artwork?
  • How can talking with a teacher or friend help me see what is missing?
  • How do details and backgrounds make my picture clearer and more interesting?
  • Why is it okay—and even good—to change my picture after I first make it?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Look at artwork (samples and their own) and notice when something is missing or could be added.
  2. Participate in a short discussion about what details or background could make a picture clearer.
  3. Add at least one new detail or a simple background to their own artwork after discussion.
  4. Work with care while revising, showing they can improve their picture instead of scribbling.
  5. Explain one change they made and how it helped their artwork.
