Unit Plan 18 (Grade K Art): Choose Art to Share

Focus: Select one or more artworks to share with others in a classroom display.

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Presenting)

Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30–45 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, kindergarten students learn that artists do not show all of their artwork at once—they choose special pieces to share. Students look through a small collection of their own work and talk about which pieces they are most proud of and why. Using simple ideas like favorite, effort, and meaning, they select one artwork for a classroom display. By the end of the unit, students understand that choosing art to share is part of being an artist and that their choice can be based on what matters most to them.

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to choose artwork to share with others?
  • How can I decide which of my artworks I am most proud of?
  • What simple ideas (favorite, effort, meaning) can help me pick artwork for display?
  • How does sharing my artwork in our classroom make me feel like an artist?
