Unit Plan 11 (Grade K Art): My Family Drawing
Kindergarten Art: Students create artwork based on personal experiences by drawing family members or pets and sharing who is in the picture and what they are doing.
Focus: Create artwork based on personal experience and talk about it.
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Connecting)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 30–45 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, kindergarten students create a family drawing based on their own lives. They think about people who are important to them at home—family members, caregivers, pets, or others—and use simple shapes, lines, and colors to show them in a picture. Students practice talking about their artwork by naming who is in their drawing and what they are doing together. By the end of the unit, they understand that art can show real experiences and people they care about.
Essential Questions
- Who is in my family or home circle?
