Unit Plan 21 (Grade K Art): Pattern Fun
Kindergarten Art: Students create repeating patterns using shapes, lines, and colors while exploring how repetition makes artwork organized and interesting.
Focus: Create repeating shapes and lines through playful exploration of patterns.
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating)
Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30–45 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, kindergarten students discover that a pattern is something that repeats again and again, like “circle–square–circle–square” or “line–dot–line–dot.” They explore patterns using shapes, lines, and colors in drawing and stamping activities. Students practice saying patterns out loud while they draw or stamp, helping them connect what they see with what they say. By the end of the unit, they can create simple repeating patterns in their artwork and point to where the pattern happens on the page.
Essential Questions
- What is a pattern, and how can I tell if something is a pattern?
- How can I use shapes, lines, and colors to make a pattern in art?
- Why do repeating lines and shapes make artwork more interesting?
- Where do I see patterns in my world (clothes, floors, nature)?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Describe a simple pattern as something that repeats (e.g., “circle, square, circle, square”).
- Create simple patterns using shapes, lines, or colors (AB, AAB, or ABC patterns).
- Use drawing or stamping tools to make a repeating pattern across a strip or area of paper.
- Point to their artwork and identify where the pattern is repeating.
- Share one pattern they made with a classmate or the class.
Standards Alignment — Kindergarten (NCAS-Aligned)
- VA:Cr2.Ka — Explore elements of art (line, shape, color, texture) through hands-on experimentation.
- Example: Students experiment with making different kinds of lines.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can say what a pattern is (something that repeats).
- I can make a pattern using shapes, lines, or colors.
- I can point to my picture and show where the pattern repeats.
- I can tell a friend about the pattern I made.
