Unit Plan 28 (Grade K Art): Planning Our Art Show

Focus: Organize artwork for display by helping choose, group, and plan where pieces will go with teacher support.

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Presenting)

Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30–45 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, kindergarten students become “art show planners” as they help organize class artwork for a simple art show or gallery. They look through their own and classmates’ mounted pieces, talk about which ones to include, and think about how to group or arrange them on walls and boards. With strong teacher support, students practice making choices, noticing how groups of artworks look together, and deciding where art might go in the room. By the end of the unit, they can explain that they helped plan how the art show will look.

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to plan an art show?
  • How can we choose and organize artwork for a display?
  • How does grouping artwork together change how the wall or room looks?
  • How can I help my class get ready to share our art with others?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Look through class artwork and help choose pieces to include in an art show with teacher support.
  2. Sort or group artworks using simple ideas (by project, by color, by size, or by table group).
  3. Help decide where groups of artwork should go in the room (which wall, board, or area).
  4. Use simple language to talk about how groups of artwork look when they are arranged together.
  5. Explain one way they personally helped plan the art show.
