Unit Plan 14 (Grade K ELA): Main Topic & Key Details (Informational)

Focus: Name topic; pick 2–3 details from words/pictures

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Subject Area: English Language Arts (Informational Reading • Speaking/Listening)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This week builds children’s informational reading muscles: they’ll learn that the main topic is what a text is mostly about, and key details are the important pieces of information that tell about that topic. Using pictures and short teacher-read sections, students will name the topic and select 2–3 key details, then share them in short oral summaries.

  1. Name the main topic of an informational text/page after read-aloud and picture walk (RI.K.2).
  2. Identify 2–3 key details that tell more about the topic, using both words and pictures (RI.K.2, RI.K.7).
  3. Describe how a picture/diagram shows information that matches the words (RI.K.7).
  4. Engage actively in group reading and turn-and-talk routines (RI.K.10).
