Unit Plan 12 (Grade K ELA): Organizing & Closing Opinions
Kindergarten opinion writing unit: students write short pieces with a clear opening, one matching reason, and a simple closing, using revision and editing to strengthen clarity, capitals, spacing, and punctuation.

Focus: Opening statement, one reason, simple closing
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Subject Area: English Language Arts (Writing • Language • Speaking/Listening)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Building on students’ early opinion work, this week tightens structure: a clear opening statement, one matching reason, and a simple closing. Children study modeled opinion pages, rehearse with sentence frames, and use a kid-friendly revision checklist to add a closing and polish conventions (capital, spaces, end mark).
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…
- Compose a simple opinion with an opening (I like/favorite…), one reason, and a closing (“That is why…,” “So ___ is my favorite.”) (W.K.1).
- Revise with adult/peer support to add or strengthen the closing and clarify the reason (W.K.5).
- Apply basic conventions: capital at the start, spaces between words, and an end mark (L.K.2).
Standards Alignment — CCSS Kindergarten
- W.K.1 Write/dictate opinion pieces: state topic or book and an opinion/preference.
