Unit Plan 29 (Grade K ELA): Procedural / How-To Writing

Focus: Clear steps with pictures/labels; materials lists

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Subject Area: English Language Arts (Writing • Language • Speaking/Listening)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Writers learn to teach others by creating how-to pieces. Students will name a topic, make a materials list, and show clear steps with pictures, labels, and simple sentences using kid-friendly sequence words (first, then, next, finally). We’ll draft, revise for sense, and publish a mini how-to page or booklet.

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…

  1. Name a topic and create a materials list for a how-to (W.K.2).
  2. Show steps in order with pictures and labels/sentences (W.K.2; L.K.1).
  3. Apply basic conventions: capital at start, finger spaces, and period (L.K.2).
  4. Tell/perform their how-to orally, answering a peer’s simple question (W.K.2; L.K.1).

Standards Alignment — CCSS Kindergarten

  • W.K.2 Use drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts that name a topic, supply some information, and provide a sense of closure.
  • L.K.1 Demonstrate command of conventions of standard English grammar and usage (produce/expand complete sentences in shared activities).
  • L.K.2 Demonstrate command of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling (developmentally appropriate).

Success Criteria — student language

  • I can name my topic and list materials.
  • I can show steps in order with first/then/next/finally.
  • My pictures and labels/sentences match the steps.
  • At least one sentence shows Capital–Spaces–Period.
