Unit Plan 18 (Grade K ELA): Sharing Findings Clearly

Focus: Speaking with visuals; simple slides/posters; polite listening

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Subject Area: English Language Arts (Speaking/Listening • Writing/Publishing • Language)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students turn last week’s mini-research into clear shares. They will plan a simple visual (poster or one-slide), rehearse 1–2 complete sentences, and present to the class with polite listening routines. With adult support, they’ll help publish their work (photograph a poster or add a picture to a class slide), using clear voice and simple grammar.

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…

  1. Describe a familiar topic (research fact) using 1–2 complete sentences and relevant vocabulary (SL.K.4; L.K.1).
  2. Add a visual (drawing, label, or simple digital slide/poster) that helps others understand (SL.K.5; W.K.6).
  3. Speak audibly and clearly, using appropriate volume and a friendly tone (SL.K.6).
  4. Listen politely: eyes on speaker, no interrupting, ask/answer one friendly question (SL.K.6).

Standards Alignment — CCSS Kindergarten

  • SL.K.4 Describe familiar people, places, things, and events with prompting and support.
  • SL.K.5 Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions to provide additional detail.
  • SL.K.6 Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.
  • W.K.6 With guidance and support, use digital tools to produce/publish writing (e.g., contribute to a class slide).
  • L.K.1 Demonstrate command of standard English grammar and usage when speaking (complete sentences; I/We; present-tense verbs).

Success Criteria — student language

  • I can say 1–2 sentences that tell my fact.
  • I can show a picture or slide/poster that matches my words.
  • I can speak clearly so others hear me.
  • I can listen politely and ask/answer one question.
