Unit Plan 3 (Grade K Math): Compare to 5

Compare 0–5 sets using one-to-one matching; record greater than, less than, or equal with >, <, =; and justify “more/fewer/same” using 5-frames, objects, and words.

Unit Plan 3 (Grade K Math): Compare to 5

Focus: Match and compare two groups within 0–5 using >, <, = language (more/fewer/same); justify comparisons with models and words.

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: Mathematics (Counting & Cardinality)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–40 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students compare small sets by lining up objects in one-to-one matches and deciding which set has more, fewer, or the same. They use 5-frames, dot images, and numerals (0–5) to record comparisons with >, <, and =. Emphasis is on explaining why a comparison is true.

Essential Questions

  • How does matching one-by-one help me decide more, fewer, or same?
  • When should I use >, <, or = to record my thinking?
  • How can a 5-frame or dot image help me justify a comparison?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Match two groups (0–5) with one-to-one correspondence to decide more/fewer/same.
  2. Compare two written numerals (0–5) and state which is greater/less or if equal.
  3. Use models (5-frames, dot images, objects) to explain a comparison.
  4. Record comparisons with symbols (>, <, =) and words.

Standards Alignment — CCSS Kindergarten (threaded across the unit)

  • K.CC.6 (to 5): Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number in another group by using matching and counting strategies.
  • K.CC.7 (0–5): Compare two numbers between 0 and 5 presented as written numerals.
  • Mathematical Practices: MP.3 emphasized (justify/critique); MP.2, MP.6 threaded.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can match two sets one-by-one and tell which has more, fewer, or the same.
  • I can use >, <, or = to record my comparison for 0–5.
  • I can show and tell why my comparison is true using a 5-frame or objects.
