Unit Plan 28 (Grade K Math): Count to 100

Count to 100 by ones and tens, and count on from any number within 100 using charts, number lines, and counting collections to track one-more and ten-more patterns.

Unit Plan 28 (Grade K Math): Count to 100

Focus: Count by ones and by tens to 100; count on from any starting number within 100 using hundred charts, number lines, and counting collections.

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: Mathematics (Counting & Cardinality)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–40 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students extend counting to 100 by ones and tens and practice counting on from any number (e.g., start at 37 and keep going). They use hundred charts, decade cards, ten-frames, and bundles of ten to see structure and patterns (decade jumps, next-number is one more). Emphasis is on accurate tracking and continuing a sequence without restarting at 1.

Essential Questions

  • How do I count on from any starting number without starting over?
  • What patterns help me count by tens (10, 20, 30, …, 100)?
  • How do tools like the hundred chart and number line help me keep track?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Count by ones to 100; continue a sequence from any given number within 100.
  2. Count by tens to 100 and identify decade numbers on tools (chart/line).
  3. Use counting collections and ten-frames/bundles to maintain one-to-one and track totals.
  4. Explain a next-number decision using “one more” or “ten more” language.

Standards Alignment — CCSS Kindergarten (threaded across the unit)

  • K.CC.1: Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
  • K.CC.2: Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
  • Mathematical Practices: MP.6 (precision), MP.7 (structure), MP.8 (repeated reasoning), MP.1 (persevere).

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can count to 100 by ones and by tens.
  • I can count on from any number (e.g., start at 47 and keep going).
  • I can use a hundred chart/number line to keep track and explain one more/ten more.
