Unit Plan 26 (Grade K Math): Model & Draw Shapes
Build and draw shapes from verbal attributes; identify sides, corners, and curves; and name shapes correctly in any size or orientation.
Focus: Build and draw shapes to match attribute descriptions; attend to corners/sides/curves and name shapes in any size/orientation.
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: Mathematics (Geometry—Modeling & Drawing)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–40 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students model and draw common shapes from clear verbal descriptions (e.g., “a shape with 4 sides and 4 corners”). They attend to straight vs. curved lines, count corners/sides, and correctly name shapes even when they’re rotated or scaled. By week’s end, students can listen to an attribute riddle, build or sketch the shape, and justify the match.
Essential Questions
- How do corners and sides help me build or draw a shape from words?
- How can I name a shape even when it is turned or stretched?
- What is the difference between straight sides and curved lines when modeling shapes?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Model shapes using classroom materials (e.g., sticks and clay for corners).
- Draw shapes that match a verbal attribute description (number of sides/corners, straight vs. curved).
- Name shapes (triangle, square, rectangle, hexagon, circle) in different sizes/orientations.
- Explain why a model/drawing matches a description using precise shape words.
Standards Alignment — CCSS Kindergarten (threaded across the unit)
- K.G.5: Model shapes in the world by building them from components and drawing shapes.
- K.G.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
- Mathematical Practices: MP.6 (precision of vocabulary), MP.3 (explain/critique), MP.5 (use tools), MP.7 (structure in attributes).
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can build a shape that matches the sides and corners you describe.
- I can draw a shape and say its name even when it is turned.
- I can tell how my shape matches the description using shape words.
