Unit Plan 7 (Grade K Math): Numbers 6–10—Count & Write
Count, read, and write numbers 6–10 using touch-count for one-to-one; match sets to numerals and use cardinality to explain that the last number said tells how many.
Focus: Count, read, and write 6–10; use touch-count for one-to-one correspondence; match each set to one number name and numeral; confirm cardinality (“the last number tells how many”).
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: Mathematics (Counting & Cardinality)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–40 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students extend counting to 10, practicing touch-count to keep one-to-one. They build, count, and show sets for 6–10 with objects, ten-frames, and drawings, then match each set to the correct numeral. Emphasis is on saying the number names in order and understanding cardinality.
Essential Questions
- How does touch-counting help me keep one-to-one when I count 6–10?
- What does the last number name I say tell me about the set (cardinality)?
- How can I show the same number different ways (objects, ten-frame, drawing, fingers) and match it to the numeral?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Count to 10 and start from numbers other than 1 (within 10).
- Use one-to-one correspondence to touch-count sets of 6–10 objects.
- State the cardinality of a set of 6–10: the last number name tells how many.
- Read and write numerals 6–10 and match each numeral to a counted set.
- Represent numbers 6–10 with ten-frames, objects, and simple drawings.
Standards Alignment — CCSS Kindergarten (threaded across the unit)
- K.CC.1 (to 10): Count to 10; begin counting from numbers >1.
- K.CC.3 (6–10): Write numbers 6–10; represent a number of objects with a written numeral.
- K.CC.4a–c: One-to-one correspondence, stable order, and cardinality.
- K.CC.5: Count to answer “how many?” for sets up to 10 in arranged and scattered configurations.
- Mathematical Practices: MP.2 (reason about quantities), MP.6 (precision), MP.5 (tools) threaded.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I touch-count each object one time and say number names in the right order.
- I know the last number I say tells how many (cardinality).
- I can read and write the numerals 6–10 and match them to my sets.
- I can show a number different ways (objects, ten-frame, drawing, fingers).
