Kindergarten music unit where students share song preferences, use simple music words to explain why, and practice respectful listening and turn-taking.
Focus: Share thoughts and preferences about music using simple reasons and music words.
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: Music (Responding • Connecting)
Total Unit Duration: 4 sessions (2–4 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students practice listening to short pieces of music and sharing opinions in simple, respectful ways. They learn to say what they like, don’t like, or feel unsure about and to give a reason, such as “It is fast,” “It is quiet,” or “It makes me want to dance.” Students also learn how to listen politely when classmates share, building a safe classroom community where everyone’s music ideas are valued.
