Unit Plan 32 (Grade K Music): Favorite Songs

Focus: Sing and move to favorite classroom songs with accuracy and expression.

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: Music (Performing • Responding)

Total Unit Duration: 4 sessions (2–4 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students celebrate their learning by returning to favorite classroom songs and chants. They practice singing with a steady beat, clear words, and confident voices while adding facial expression and simple movements. With teacher guidance, they use very simple checklists and feedback to rehearse, improve, and then share songs for classmates.

Essential Questions

  • How can I show that I am ready to sing my favorite songs for others?
  • What does it mean to sing with expression and not just say the words?
  • How can I use practice and feedback to help my performances get better?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Sing a small set of familiar classroom songs with a steady beat, clear words, and focused posture.
  2. Use simple rehearsal strategies (echoing tricky parts, clapping rhythms first, speaking words before singing) to improve accuracy.
  3. Describe and demonstrate what it means to perform with expression (face, body, and voice) for an audience.
  4. Perform at least one favorite song for peers, following class expectations for posture, start/stop, and audience behavior.
  5. Offer and receive kind, simple feedback (“one thing you did well” and “one idea to try”) after performances.

Standards Alignment — Kindergarten (NAfME-Aligned)
