Unit Plan 27 (Grade K Music): Group Music Performance

Focus: Perform music together as a class with expression, focus, and appropriate audience/performer behavior.

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: Music (Performing • Responding • Connecting)

Total Unit Duration: 2–4 sessions (2+ weeks), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, kindergarten students prepare and present simple group performances for their classmates. Through familiar songs, chants, and movement pieces, they practice starting and stopping together, using their singing voices and instruments with focus, and showing appropriate concert behavior. With guidance, students learn that performing is about making music together, doing their best, and being respectful performers and listeners.

Essential Questions

  • How do we show that we are ready to perform music as a class?
  • What does it look and sound like to perform with focus, expression, and togetherness?
  • How should we behave as an audience when friends are performing?
  • How can performing music for others help our classroom feel like a community?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Perform familiar songs, chants, and movement pieces with the class, starting and stopping together.
  2. Show performance focus by using good posture, watching the teacher or leader, and staying in their own space.
  3. Demonstrate expression (face, dynamics, simple movement) that matches the mood or purpose of the song.
  4. Show appropriate audience etiquette (quiet bodies, listening, clapping at the right time) when others perform.
  5. Participate in a short class performance share, reflecting on “what went well” and “what to try next time.”
