Unit Plan 20 (Grade K Music): Music Choices
Kindergarten music unit on sharing song preferences, matching music to classroom activities, and explaining choices using simple music words.
Focus: Share music preferences and explain choices.
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: Music (General Music)
Total Unit Duration: 2–4 sessions (2+ weeks), 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students explore how their music choices connect to what they are doing and how they feel. Through guided listening, visuals, and simple discussions, they compare short musical excerpts and decide which ones they like best and why. They also practice choosing music for different classroom purposes (rest time, movement, clean-up) and learn to share their ideas respectfully with peers.
Essential Questions
- How do my interests and experiences help me choose music I like?
- How can I tell if a song is a good fit for what we are doing (resting, moving, learning)?
- How can I use music words to explain why I like a song or why it fits an activity?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Listen to short musical examples and choose a favorite, giving a simple reason (e.g., “It’s calm,” “It’s fast and fun”).
- Match music examples to a specific purpose (rest time, movement, clean-up, greeting) using pictures or words.
- Compare two pieces and explain which one they prefer for a classroom activity.
- Create a simple Music Choice Card that shows a preferred song, the activity it fits, and a picture or word explaining why.
Standards Alignment — Kindergarten Music (NAfME-Aligned)
- MU:Re9.1.Ka — With guidance, apply personal preferences when evaluating music.
- Example: Saying which song they like best and why.
- MU:Cn10.0.Ka — Demonstrate how interests, knowledge, and skills relate to personal choices and intent when creating, performing, and responding to music.
- Example: Explaining why they like singing a certain song.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can say which song I like and give a reason (fast, slow, happy, calm, loud, soft).
- I can choose music that fits a classroom activity and tell why it works.
- I can listen quietly when others share their music choices.
- I can make a simple Music Choice Card that shows my favorite song, what it’s for, and why I picked it.
