Unit Plan 18 (Grade K Music): Performing with Confidence

Focus: Perform songs with focus, joy, and appropriate audience behavior during simple classroom “mini-concerts.”

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: Music (Performing • Responding • Connecting)

Total Unit Duration: 4 sessions (2+ weeks), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students learn what it means to be a performer and an audience member in music class. They practice standing or sitting in performance spots, focusing on the teacher, and singing familiar songs with confident voices and kind faces. Through role-play and short “mini-performances,” they discover that performing is about sharing music, doing their best, and showing respect for others.

Essential Questions

  • How do I show that I am ready to perform music for my classmates?
  • What does it look and sound like when I perform with confidence and focus?
  • How can I be a respectful performer and a kind audience member when others share their music?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Describe and demonstrate basic performance expectations (eyes on teacher, quiet body, standing/sitting tall).
  2. Perform at least one familiar song with mostly accurate pitch, steady beat, and confident expression.
  3. Move from practice to performance by using simple teacher feedback (e.g., “stand tall,” “start together”).
  4. Show appropriate audience behavior (quiet listening, eyes on performers, clapping at the right time).
  5. Share, in simple language or gestures, how it feels to perform for others and what helped them feel brave.

Standards Alignment — Kindergarten Music (NAfME-Aligned)

  • MU:Pr6.1.Ka — With guidance, perform music with expression.
    • Example: Singing a class song with facial expression, clear words, and simple movements.
  • MU:Pr6.1.Kb — With guidance, perform music appropriately for an audience.
    • Example: Standing in place, waiting quietly, and bowing or smiling at the end of a performance.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can show I am ready to perform by standing or sitting tall, watching the teacher, and staying in my spot.
  • I can sing or move with my best voice and body to share music with my classmates.
  • I can be a kind audience member by listening quietly and clapping at the right time.
  • I can tell how the performance made me feel (excited, proud, a little nervous) and what helped me feel brave.
