Unit Plan 4 (Grade K PE): Galloping & Sliding
Teach Kindergarten students to gallop and slide with control through playful sideways movement games, rhythm practice, relay activities, and confidence-building locomotor fun.
Focus: Help students learn galloping and sliding as sideways locomotor movements while building coordination, rhythm, and confidence through playful travel games.
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: Physical Education (Locomotor Skills • Sideways Movement • Movement Control)
Total Unit Duration: 2 core sessions + 2 optional sessions (1–2 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students continue developing Kindergarten locomotor skills by learning how to move sideways with greater coordination and control. Galloping and sliding are different from walking and running because they ask students to lead with one side of the body while keeping a rhythm and direction. This unit uses a traveling gallop warm-up and then moves into a playful Horse Race Relay game that helps students practice moving sideways in a fun and structured way. The goal is to help students feel successful using new locomotor patterns while staying safe, balanced, and active.
Essential Questions
