Unit Plan 30 (Grade K PE): Skill Challenge

Focus: Help students combine locomotor and non-locomotor skills in fun movement sequences through a creative skill challenge obstacle course.

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: Physical Education (Movement SequencesLocomotor SkillsBody Control)

Total Unit Duration: 2 core sessions + 2 optional sessions (1–2 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students continue building Kindergarten PE confidence by learning how to put several movements together into one smooth sequence. In this unit, students do more than just run or hop by themselves. They connect actions such as animal walks, jumping, balancing, freezing, and traveling through space in playful challenge paths that feel like an adventure. This unit uses animal walks as a warm-up and then moves into a creative Skill Challenge obstacle course where students complete movement missions such as crossing rivers, hopping to spots, freezing like statues, and balancing on paths. The goal is to help students practice sequencing skills while feeling active, successful, and excited to move.

Essential Questions

  • How can I put different movements together in PE?
  • What happens when I move from one skill to the next?
  • How can I show control while doing many actions in a row?
  • How can movement challenges feel fun and exciting?
