Unit Plan 11 (Grade K PE): Underhand Toss

Focus: Help students develop accuracy in throwing by practicing the underhand toss with soft objects in fun target games.

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: Physical Education (Object ControlUnderhand TossTarget Accuracy)

Total Unit Duration: 2 core sessions + 2 optional sessions (1–2 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students continue building early object-control skills by learning how to toss an object underhand toward a target. In Kindergarten, this means practicing a simple swing, gentle release, and watching where the object goes. This unit uses tossing beanbags up and catching as a warm-up and then moves into a target game where students toss beanbags into hoops. The goal is to help students understand that accurate throwing comes from control, gentle force, and aiming carefully instead of throwing hard or fast.

Essential Questions

  • How can I toss a beanbag toward a target?
  • What helps me throw with better accuracy?
  • How hard or soft should I toss?
  • How can I use equipment safely in PE?
