Unit Plan 35 (Grade K Social Studies): Taking Action Together

Focus: Guide children to plan and complete a small service-learning project as a class. Students practice listening, sharing ideas, voting, and taking turns as they decide on a way to help their classroom or school community. They then carry out a simple project (e.g., thank-you notes, hallway clean-up posters, lost-and-found sort, kindness campaign) and reflect on how working together makes a difference.

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Subject Area: Social Studies (Civics • Inquiry • Community Action)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students become “Class Helpers” who take real action to improve their classroom or school. They start by brainstorming what their community needs, then listen to each other’s ideas, vote on a simple project, and work together to carry it out. Through this process, they learn that even young children can help others, care for shared spaces, and make their community better.

Essential Questions

  • How can our class help our classroom or school?
  • What does it mean to work together and listen to others?
  • How do we decide what to do as a group (voting, taking turns)?
  • How does our small project help our community?
  • How does it feel to take action together?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Brainstorm ways to help their classroom or school community.
  2. Practice listening, taking turns, and voting to choose a class project.
  3. Participate in a small service-learning project (e.g., posters, clean-up, kindness notes).
  4. Describe how their project helps people or places at school in simple language.
  5. Share what they learned and felt about taking action together.

Standards Alignment — Kindergarten (C3-based custom)

  • K.C3.Inq.5 — Participate in a small class action to help the community.
    • Example: Make posters to remind classmates to recycle.
  • K.C3.Civ.3 — Practice participation: listening, taking turns, sharing, and simple voting.
    • Example: Vote on a class game and accept the result.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can share an idea for how our class can help.
  • I can listen and take turns when we decide what to do.
  • I can vote and accept the class choice.
  • I can help with our class project.
  • I can say one way our project helps our classroom or school.
