Unit Plan 13 (PreK Art): Celebration Painting

Focus: Create artwork inspired by a celebration, using imagination and observation.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Connecting/Creating)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, preschool children create a Celebration Painting inspired by special days, holidays, or parties they know about. Building on their understanding that art can show celebrations and traditions, children think about balloons, decorations, cakes, dancing, or other clues that make a day feel special. They use imagination and observation to plan and paint their own celebration scene, choosing colors and details that show joy and excitement. By the end of the unit, each child has a celebration-inspired painting and can share who is celebrating and what is happening in their picture.

Essential Questions

  • How can a painting show a celebration or special day?
  • What colors, shapes, and details make a picture look like a celebration?
  • How can I use my own experiences and imagination to make a celebration painting?
  • How can I tell others what is happening in my celebration artwork?
