Unit Plan 12 (PreK Art): Celebrations in Art

Focus: Recognize that art can show holidays, celebrations, and community traditions.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Connecting/Responding)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, preschool children look at artworks and pictures that show celebrations—such as birthdays, holidays, parades, or family gatherings—and learn that art can tell stories about special days. They notice people, decorations, and activities in the pictures and talk about what kind of celebration might be happening. Children also connect what they see to their own experiences, sharing simple ideas about special days in their lives. By the end of the unit, children can recognize that some artwork shows celebrations or community life and can say a few words about celebrations that matter to them.

Essential Questions

  • How can art show a celebration or special day?
  • What clues in a picture tell me that people are celebrating?
  • How are celebrations in pictures like or different from my own celebrations?
  • How can I talk about a celebration that is important to me?
