Unit Plan 24 (PreK Art): Fix & Add

Focus: Make changes to artwork after discussion by adding details or fixing missing parts.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, preschool children learn that artists can go back to their artwork to make it even better after talking about it. With gentle guidance, they look at a picture they have already made, listen to questions or ideas from the teacher and classmates, and then fix and add details. Children might add missing body parts, backgrounds, or colors to help their picture tell a clearer story. By the end of the unit, they will understand that making changes after discussion is a normal and positive part of being an artist.

Essential Questions

  • What can I fix or add to make my picture even better?
  • How can talking about my artwork give me new ideas?
  • How do extra details help people understand what is happening in my picture?
  • Why is it okay to change my artwork after I first say “I’m done”?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Children will be able to:

  1. Look at a piece of their own artwork and talk about what is there and what might be missing.
  2. Listen to simple questions or ideas about their picture (from teacher or peers) and choose one thing to fix or add.
  3. Use drawing tools or collage materials to add at least one new detail or change to their artwork.
  4. Begin to say, in simple words, what they changed (e.g., “I added hair,” “I drew the sun”).
  5. Understand that revising artwork after discussion is a normal part of making art, not a sign of doing something wrong.

Standards Alignment — PreK (NCAS-Aligned)
