Unit Plan 23 (PreK Art): My Favorite Part

Focus: Share opinions about artwork using simple words and reasons.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Responding)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, preschool children practice talking about what they like in artwork. They look at pictures and classmates’ art, then share their favorite part using simple words and reasons such as color, size, or subject. Children learn that it is okay for people to like different things and that there are no wrong answers when sharing opinions about art. By the end of the unit, children will be able to point to a part of an artwork, say “I like this,” and sometimes add a short reason like “because it’s blue” or “because it’s big.”

Essential Questions

  • What is my favorite part of this artwork?
  • How can I tell others what I like about a picture?
  • How can I explain why I like something (color, size, what is happening)?
  • How can we listen respectfully when friends share their opinions?
