Preschool art unit where children practice safe scissor use, learn proper grip and carrying rules, and build confidence cutting paper with guidance.

Unit Plan 20 (PreK Art): Safe Scissor Practice

Focus: Use scissors and art tools safely with adult guidance.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, preschool children learn how to be safe tool users in the art room, especially with scissors. They practice how to hold, carry, and use scissors correctly with lots of guidance, learning that scissors are tools, not toys. Children snip paper, make short cuts on lines, and create simple “fringe” or shapes while keeping their hands and the people around them safe. By the end of the unit, children understand basic safety rules and feel more confident using scissors as part of their art-making.

Essential Questions

  • How do we use scissors safely in the art room?
  • How should I hold and carry scissors so no one gets hurt?
  • What can I cut safely in art class (paper) and what should I never cut (hair, clothes, friends)?
  • How does practicing with scissors help me become a stronger artist and tool user?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Children will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate how to hold scissors correctly with thumbs-up grip and fingers in the right holes (with guidance).
  2. Carry scissors safely (points down, walking, no swinging) when moving around the classroom, with adult support.
  3. Use scissors to make simple snips and short cuts on paper while keeping the other hand safely away from the blades.
  4. Follow basic safety rules: only cut paper, stay in their space while cutting, and stop when the teacher gives a signal.
  5. Tell at least one scissor safety rule in their own words (“We only cut paper,” “We walk with scissors.”).

Standards Alignment — PreK (NCAS-Aligned)

  • VA:Cr2.PKb — Use art tools safely with guidance.
