PreK informational comprehension unit: students identify what a nonfiction page is mostly about and select 2–3 key details from pictures, labels, and captions. Through daily group reading and picture-pointing routines, they build early evidence-based comprehension skills.

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session (use two short blocks if needed)


I. Introduction

This week, children learn to tell what an informational page is about (the main topic) and to pick 2–3 key details that teach more about that topic. Students use pictures, labels, and short captions to answer simple questions, and they actively participate in group reading every day.


II. Objectives and Standards

  1. Name the main topic of an informational page (“This page is about ___.”) (RI.PK.2).
  2. Identify 2–3 key details in pictures or short text that teach about the topic (RI.PK.2; RI.PK.7).
  3. Use picture/label/caption evidence to answer a question (RI.PK.7).
  4. Engage in group reading with purpose—echo/choral reading and picture pointing (RI.PK.10).

Standards Alignment — PreK

  • RI.PK.7 With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the text (use pictures/words to get information).
