Unit Plan 13 (Grade PreK ELA): Text Features & Book Parts (Informational)

Focus: Front/back/title page; author vs. illustrator; icons

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: English Language Arts (Informational Text • Concepts of Books • Visual Literacy)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session (use two short blocks if needed)

I. Introduction

This week builds children’s book awareness using high-interest informational texts. Students learn to find the front cover, back cover, and title page, name what an author and an illustrator do, and notice icons/labels (arrows, magnifying glass, symbol keys) that help readers learn from pictures. Lots of point-and-name routines and playful “book walks” make these features stick.

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…

  1. Locate and name the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book (RI.PK.5).
  2. Tell who the author is and who the illustrator is, and say what each does (RI.PK.6).
  3. Use pictures and icons/labels to answer a simple question about a page (RI.PK.7).

Standards Alignment — PreK

  • RI.PK.5 Identify the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book.
  • RI.PK.6 Name the author and illustrator and define their roles.
  • RI.PK.7 With prompting/support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the text (use pictures/icons to get information).

Success Criteria — student language

  • “I can point to the front, back, and title page.” (RI.PK.5)
  • “The author writes the words; the illustrator makes the pictures.” (RI.PK.6)
  • “I can use a picture or icon to answer a question.” (RI.PK.7)
