Unit Plan 2 (PreK Math): Numbers 0–5—See It, Say It, Show It

Recognize, represent, and write numerals 0–5 through one-to-one counting, five-frames, drawings, and multi-sensory writing to build early number sense and cardinality.

Unit Plan 2 (PreK Math): Numbers 0–5—See It, Say It, Show It

Focus: Recognize, represent, and write numerals 0–5 using manipulatives, drawings, and multi-sensory routines.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Mathematics (Counting & Cardinality)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Children deepen their sense of “how many” for 0–5 by seeing sets, saying number names in order, and showing amounts with fingers, counters, five-frames, and early numeral writing. Emphasis is on one-to-one counting, the idea that the last number tells how many (cardinality), and playful, multi-sensory numeral formation.

Essential Questions

  • How do I show a number up to 5 in different ways (objects, fingers, dots, drawings, numerals)?
  • What does it mean that the last number I say tells how many are in the set?
  • How can tools like a five-frame help me check my counting?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Recognize and name numerals 0–5 in varied formats.
  2. Count objects to 5 with one-to-one correspondence and state “how many” (cardinality).
  3. Represent 0–5 with manipulatives, drawings, fingers, and five-frames.
  4. Form and write numerals 0–5 using developmentally appropriate, multi-sensory methods.

Standards Alignment — Custom CCSS-style Pre-Kindergarten

  • PK.CC.3: Read, write, and name numerals 0–5.
  • PK.CC.4: Understand one-to-one correspondence and that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted (cardinality) within 0–5.
  • PK.CC.5: Count to answer “how many?” for sets up to 5 arranged or scattered.
  • Mathematical Practices (MP.1–MP.6) threaded throughout (perseverance, reasoning, modeling, tools, precision, structure).

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can point to each object once and say number names in order to 5.
  • I can tell how many are in a group (0–5) and check with a five-frame.
  • I can show a number up to 5 with objects, fingers, drawings, and a matching numeral.
