Unit Plan 29 (PreK Math): Read, Write & Match Numbers 0–10

Recognize numerals 0–10, trace/write 0–5, and match numerals to counted sets using one-to-one and clear “how many” statements.

Unit Plan 29 (PreK Math): Read, Write & Match Numbers 0–10

Focus: Recognize numerals 0–10, trace/write numerals (emphasis 0–5), and match numerals to sets using one-to-one counting.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Mathematics (Counting & Numerals—Recognition & Writing)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Children connect numerals to quantities. They play numeral-matching games, trace and form numerals (with focus on 0–5 for accuracy), and count objects to match a numeral (0–10). Routines strengthen one-to-one and clear “how many” statements.

Essential Questions

  • How do I match a numeral to a set of objects?
  • What helps me trace and write a numeral the right way?
  • How does one-to-one counting help me know how many?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Recognize and name numerals 0–10 in songs, games, and center activities.
  2. Trace and begin to write numerals (accuracy focus on 0–5; attempts for 6–10).
  3. Match a numeral card to a set by using one-to-one counting (to 10).
  4. Explain how many by pointing/touching and stating the final count.

Standards Alignment — Custom CCSS-style Pre-Kindergarten

  • PK.CC.3 — Recognize & write numerals 0–5. Description: Matches and traces numerals; begins to write 0–5. Example: Finds the card “3” and places it next to three bears. Aligns to: K.CC.3 (subset 0–5).
  • PK.CC.4 — One-to-one counting to 10. Description: Touches/moves one object for each number word. Example: Counts 7 crayons by moving them one at a time. Aligns to: K.CC.4a (direct).
  • Mathematical Practices: MP.1–MP.6 threaded (perseverance; modeling/tools; precision; structure/regularity).

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can name numerals 0–10 and point to the one I hear.
  • I can trace and try to write numerals (best work on 0–5).
  • I can match a numeral to a set by touch counting each object once.
  • I can say how many at the end of my count.
