Unit Plan 16 (PreK Math): Talk About Data

Focus: Make simple data statements about sorted groups using more, fewer, same, most, least; support ideas with quick counts and labels.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Mathematics (Early Data & Measurement)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Children practice talking about data after sorting or displaying objects. They look, count, and then say what they notice: which group has more or fewer, whether two groups are the same, and which has the most or least. The emphasis is on clear language and pointing to evidence (cubes, pictures, or stickers).

Essential Questions

  • How can I tell which group has more, fewer, or the same?
  • What evidence (counts, labels) helps me explain my idea?
  • How do we share data statements so everyone understands?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Make simple comparison statements about groups (more/fewer/same; most/least).
  2. Point to evidence (counts, towers, stickers, or pictures) to support a statement.
  3. Use labels to name categories when talking about data.
  4. Ask and answer simple questions about a class data display.

Standards Alignment — Custom CCSS-style Pre-Kindergarten

  • PK.MD.4 — Talk about data (“more in this group”). Makes simple comparison statements about sorted sets. Example: “More triangles than circles.” (Aligns to: K.MD.3 — interpretation readiness)
  • (Supportive) MP.1, MP.3, MP.6 threaded (try a strategy, explain to others, speak precisely).

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can say which group has more, fewer, or the same.
  • I can show evidence for my statement (point to counts/labels).
  • I can use most and least when we look at class data.
