Unit Plan 11 (PreK Music): Instrument Sounds & Names
PreK unit for instrument detective listening, naming sounds, describing loud/soft and high/low, and sharing favorite instrument sounds.
Focus: Listen to, identify, and describe different instrument sounds, using simple words and pictures.
Grade Level: PreK
Subject Area: Music (Creating • Performing • Responding • Connecting)
Total Unit Duration: 2–3 sessions (2–3 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Children become “instrument detectives” who listen carefully to classroom and recorded instruments. Through listening games, picture cards, and movement, they learn to notice how each instrument sounds (loud/soft, high/low, smooth/jumpy, ringing/short) and begin to use simple words to describe what they hear. They also practice naming familiar instruments and sharing which sounds they like best.
Essential Questions
- What kinds of sounds do different instruments make?
- How can I tell instruments apart just by listening?
- How can I share which instrument sound I like and why?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Children will be able to:
- Listen to short examples of classroom instruments and point to or name the instrument that matches the sound.
- Use simple words to describe instrument sounds (e.g., loud/soft, high/low, ringy, short, smooth, bumpy).
- Sort instrument pictures or real instruments into basic groups by how they sound (shake, hit/tap, ring).
- Share a favorite instrument sound and tell one reason they like it (e.g., “It is loud,” “It jingles”).
- Help complete an “Instrument Listening Chart” with pictures or marks that show what they heard and liked.
Standards Alignment — PreK Music
- MU:Re7.1.PK — Identify music through listening.
- Children recognize and describe sounds and music they hear.
- Example: Saying “That music is loud” or “That is a drum.”
- MU:Re8.1.PK — Communicate ideas about music.
- Children share preferences and reactions using words, drawings, or movement.
- Example: Drawing a picture inspired by music.
Success Criteria — Child-Friendly Language
- I can listen and tell if I hear a drum, shaker, or bell.
- I can use words like loud, soft, high, or low to talk about instrument sounds.
- I can help sort instruments or pictures by how they sound or are played.
- I can say which instrument sound is my favorite and tell one reason why.
