Unit Plan 22 (PreK Music): Music at Home & School

Focus: Connect familiar songs and sounds to children’s daily routines at home and school, noticing when and how music is used.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Music

Total Unit Duration: 3–4 sessions (2+ weeks), 15–20 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Children explore how music is part of their everyday lives—morning routines, clean-up, birthdays, car rides, bedtime, and school transitions. Through listening, movement, and sharing, they notice that music can help us remember what to do, feel calm or excited, and feel connected to people we love. The teacher models talking about where music shows up at home and school, inviting children to share their own experiences.

Essential Questions

  • Where do we hear music at home and at school?
  • How can music help us with routines like cleaning up, moving, or getting ready?
  • How does music help us feel happy, calm, or ready to celebrate?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Children will be able to:

  1. Name at least one time they hear music at home (e.g., car ride, bedtime, TV show, celebration).
  2. Name at least one time they hear music at school (e.g., morning song, clean-up chant, movement song).
  3. Show, through words, pictures, or movement, how a familiar song connects to a routine, a place, or a feeling.
  4. Participate in a simple “Home & School Music Chart,” sorting pictures or song examples into where they belong.
