Focus: Help children show joyful movement expression through playful music experiences that encourage free dance, rhythm response, and happy participation.
Grade Level: PreK
Subject Area: Physical Education (Movement Expression • Rhythm • Enjoyment of Play)
Total Unit Duration: 2 core sessions + 2 optional sessions (1–2 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
PreK students continue building movement confidence by learning that PE can be a place for creative, joyful movement as well as games and skill practice. At this age, children benefit from simple music activities that let them move freely, respond to rhythm, and explore how their bodies can sway, clap, spin, freeze, and dance in safe space. This unit uses rhythm clapping as the warm-up and then moves into free dance with scarves and music, where children move to child-friendly songs while practicing expressive movement and body control. The goal is to help children enjoy moving to music, express themselves through dance, and connect physical activity with fun.
